Review of Man Mission
Man Mission by Eytan Uliel is a story of adventure and friendship set on the foundation of the roller-coaster that is life. It revolves around the experiences of four men over fifteen years as they constantly seek out new, challenging adventures.
In three parts and sixteen chapters, Eytan Uliel documents the events that take place on a Man Mission participated in by Alec, Sam, Daniel, and himself.
The book begins with how they all met. An invitation accepted by a stranger to a food event taking place somewhere nearby would pave the way for the birth of Man Mission, an event that was about all things food, travel, and fitness.
Although Man Mission was born out of a desire to escape the constraints that the academic world imposed on their lifestyles and explore the world's gastronomy, it will evolve into a space where they can relive the joys of freedom, reconnect with their youth, ponder life's big questions, and bond with one another.
In fifteen years, this group would have travelled to, hiked in, walked in, kayaked over, climbed different places in different countries all over the world while enjoying their cuisine, immersing themselves in the culture and mingling with new people and ways of life.
Their adventures would be dog-eared by the ongoings of their individual lives; marriage, childbirth, divorce, unemployment, career, health issues, changes, death and so much more. This makes their adventures, not just a journey but also an inextricable part of their life's trajectory.
The storyline was very interesting to read. The experiences of the group in different parts of the world were energetic and captivating. The author knew how to infuse humour, vibrancy, and emotions into each chapter, which keeps the reader invested.
The ability of the author to include life lessons in the form of introspection from the characters was well thought out. The reader not only derived entertainment from the book; there was knowledge to be gleaned here and there. These positive aspects are why I would rate Man Mission by Eytan Uliel 4 out of 4 stars .
The book could have done with more pages because it felt so short even though it had over three hundred pages. In each of the chapters, the author only highlights the major happenings while skimming over details or the seemingly insignificant things that could have increased the quality of the story.
I would recommend this book to a mature audience interested in the themes of travel, gastronomy, adventure, and friendship. Man Mission is an interesting work of art that would inspire you to seek adventures of your own. It is a must-read.
