Review of Man Mission
Four friends from different walks of life united by one promise: to take a vacation every year. A one-week getaway filled with exotic foods, rich culture, often dangerous adventures, and an unbreakable bond of brotherhood. The Man Mission, written by Eytan Uliel, is a book that comes as a respite to both travel lovers and readers who enjoy a good laugh. This annual ritual is riddled with funny rules that push them out of their comfort zones. The fact that the author is an avid traveler is apparent from the real-time descriptions of all the travel destinations.
On the face of it, the book is seemingly about the adrenaline-filled adventures of four friends. However, beneath the fun, there is an ancillary narrative at play. This tradition that begins with their mutual love for travel and need for excitement soon takes on a new meaning. It becomes a source of balance for them to contemplate the fundamentals of work, marriage, and family in their daily lives. By drawing parallels between the carefree trips and the vulnerability of life, the author has effectively managed to break down the notions of what a man should be in the modern world.
The aspect of this book I enjoyed the most is that it has the ability to satisfy the palates of people with diverse tastes. On the one hand, it promises a good laugh. And on the other hand, it provides introspective insights into what society has conditioned us to believe the definition of a man is. A deeper look into the story is a commentary on life that is worth reading. Additionally, the writing style is such that it teleports the reader to all these places, giving us the feeling of vacationing with them. The dialogues are engaging and witty. The author's sense of humor is remarkable, which comes across wonderfully in the characters. Furthermore, the choice of keeping the protagonist nameless brings him closer to home by instilling a certain level of relatability with the storyline in the reader.
There was no aspect of this book that I disliked. It is an exceptionally well-written book with the perfect blend of humor and thought-provoking dynamics. For this reason, I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. It is also exceptionally well-edited.
I recommend this book to mature teens and adults. This book will satisfy those who have a fond love for travel and adventure. It will also be suitable for those looking for a story that makes one think about the ideal notions of society, their impact on individuals in their daily routines, and the need for changing the perspective. It is a candid look at the world from a man's point of view. It is worth reading at least once.
