Review of Man Mission
Man Mission is a captivating story that follows the lives of four college friends as they balance work, marriage, leisure and real life problems.A simple conversation between two of these friends birthed the idea of having an annual boys trip to exotic destinations to challenge themselves to do vigorous physical activities and have fun.
Soon this activity that was meant to be only for the thrill turned to be a necessity to escape reality as the friends evolved from optimistic university graduates to husbands, father's and career men facing real world problems.
The Man Mission trip quickly became a therapeutic undertaking for this men who felt like nobody in the real world could understand their problems because to the world they had a perfect life.
The group faithfully keeps this tradition for fifteen years visiting places like Australia, New Zealand,Peru, Thailand,Spain and South Africa among other destinations.Man Mission however comes with its own misfortunes.Fractured ankles, heat rash and near-drowning in dangerous river currents are just but an example of the risks of this trips.
Ultimately Man Mission helps the four friends to deal with unhappy marriages, unfulfilling jobs, parenthood and grief through their interaction with people of different cultures and lifestyles leading them to understand that their struggles are not unique to them neither are they permanent.
Eytan Uliel has successfully captured the reader's interest through his mastery of the art of telling the adventures of the Man Mission trips alongside the real life circumstances back at home for the characters. Uliel beautifully tells the story of real life from an average man's perspective.
He challenges the societal expectations of what a man should be. The society expects a man to be a provider, fearless, excellent at fathering, loving husband, career-driven and ever strong forgetting that men are human with low times and sometimes may need someone to listen to them without judgement. The lack of expression of feelings among men has been highlighted as a major issue in the society which jeopardizes marriages, careers and overall self esteem of its victims.
The book is so we'll presented that nothing ill was found of it. There were no typing errors or any plot holes. The plot has undoubtedly left no stone unturned.
A rating of 4 out of 4 stars does the required justice to this book. The book is told from a real-world perspective highlighting the modern society while keeping the reader relaxed through the humorous incidences during the trips.
The pink bracelet for whoever is unmanly idea really brought humour into the book as the friends passed it to whoever failed to succeed in the kayaking, hiking and cycling activities that they undertook.
This book is appropriate for all kinds of readers. Its themes are well in line with reality and it would be a great read for anyone with a passion for adventure and exploration. Uliel's emphasis on self awareness is a reminder that life is not always what we want it to be and that is okay because even the roses have thorns.
