Mary Opal Shook, also known as Aunt Mary Opal, Jesi Viscuso, and Nicole are brought together by Rachael LeBlanc. Aunt Mary Opal was a widow with three daughters, a cancer patient, and she liked to have her hair backcombed neatly. Rachael, the wife of a rock star, had tattoos on almost every part of her body, hence the novel’s title, Backcomb and Tattoo. Jessi was a free-spirited woman with a loving but fragile heart. Nicole was a strong and intelligent woman on the verge of committing suicide due to a failed marriage. These four women became best friends and strengthened each other. Despite each of them having secrets, this did not prevent them from loving and caring for each other. In the end, Rachael and her husband got separated on good terms. Jesi and Nicole got together as lovers. Aunt Mary Opal committed suicide with Rachael’s help to escape the pain of her cancer. However, even after her death, the ladies still continued with their light luncheons and got closer, never forgetting their lovely Aunt Mary Opal.

Backcomb and Tattoo by Shea R. Embry is an easygoing and light-hearted novel. The novel covers various themes, including friendship, love, marriage, homosexuality, and death. The book is easy to understand and lightens the reader’s mood with occasional humor in the characters’ dialogue. The author also demonstrates how unconditional love among friends can heal emotional scars. A good example is how Nicole was able to fall in love with Jesi after her failed marriage. The love from her three friends helped heal the scars left by her ex-wife.

One thing I really liked about this novel was the author’s ability to hook a reader’s attention. I found the development of the plots and scenes in the story well organized and compelling.

My only dissatisfaction with this book was the fact that certain characters were not revisited. However, there seems to be a sequel to this novel, titled “The Weed Lady,” though not explicitly stated by the author. Hopefully, these characters will be revisited in the sequel.

The book was well edited. It contained few errors but that did not affect my reading and understanding of the book. I also enjoyed reading this book a lot. Hence, I rate this book four out of four stars.

I would recommend this book to adults and mature teens as it contains vulgar words and mild sexual content.
