I was a little skeptical about this children’s book because there are so many books made to help children learn their alphabet. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The rhymes are really cute and understandable. I can definitely see using these to help children learn their alphabet.

The brightly colored pictures really help for visual learners. I also love that each animal is portrayed as a character. These two factors are fantastic! If a child is trying to write or pick out the letter “X” and can’t remember what it looks like, you can remind them by saying “x-ray fish” and many kids will be able to visualize the picture of the x-ray fish in front of the x and remember.

The poems are not too long and easy to say. No lengthy or hard to understand words make it more enjoyable for children and the short length of each poem makes them easy for adults and children to memorize. The introduction page is a little long but not inconveniently so. It explains why this book works better than the default system in our schools.

One thing that I did not particularly like was that there were several poems that didn’t have perfect rhymes and so it may be a little confusing. Another thing that I did not like was that there were a couple of animals that are not instantly recognizable especially to children of such a young age such as umbrella bird, or wombat.

The other side of these animals not being immediately recognizable is that the child can more directly associate them with each letter and this might mean that it will be more effective than if they could think of their pet or something other than the letter.

The print size and font are easy to read so that grandparents whose eyesight has started to lessen or older siblings who have not quite completely mastered reading yet can still share it with the younger children just learning their alphabet.

In conclusion, I think this is a great educational children’s book. I can see it being used in classrooms and homes alike. It’s easy to read and fun to use. Kids will love the brightly colored pages and fun rhyming words. I wouldn’t hesitate to use it to teach the alphabet to any child. I give it a total 3 out of 4 .
