Backcomb & Tattoo by Shea R Embry is such a remarkable and captivating book. It's a story of four different extraordinary women with different personalities who share adventures, love, friendship and secrets. It's a roller coaster of emotions.

The story begins with Rachael who is from visiting her sick mother in Charlotte and is eager to meet her husband but instead is met with a sticky note informing her the rock star husband is out of town and a party invite from the neighbour Teri. At the party, Rachael is drawn to Aunt Mary Opal who stands out from the entire crowd with her white hair and a wine glass at hand. As the two get to talk about flowers Rachael finds herself at ease and relaxed. Aunt Mary Opal is witty and full of secrets over a glass of Jack Daniel the friendship began over luncheons and drinks. Rachael travels and meets Jesi an opinionated, free-spirited, well-travelled woman who joins in the friendship. Lastly is an intelligent redhead woman called Nicole who happened to fall in a store where the three women were and that was how the great friendship was formed.

Aunt Mary Opal being the oldest among these young women enjoys their company. Through the meals they shared and the regular Jack Daniels the friends created a bond that helped them even at their most vulnerable. Rachael who is an interior designer is struggling with the decision of her marriage, Jesi struggling with trust, Nicole is from an abusive relationship and Aunt Mary Opal who enjoys collecting antiques and art is with her secrets. They cried, smiled, laughed and protected each other at their lowest. Will the secrets shake the core of their friendship or will it bring them even closer?

The book was professionally edited and I found no errors. I found nothing to my dislike the story was flowing and Shea R Embry gave life to each character with passion and I found it so relatable in our modern world and day-to-day lives. Talking about sexuality, family, tragedy, mental health, relationships, dealing with loss and ways of coping was enlightening.

Once I started I could not put it down. I would recommend this book to young adults, anyone who is not opposed to lesbians, and anyone who enjoys a fun, adventurous female friendship. I would rate Backcomb & Tattoo a four out of four stars.
