Review of Strong Heart
Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is a beautiful adventure fantasy book about a young girl named Sarah. She has overcome a lot in her 13 years of life. Her experience with loss and betrayal by loved ones has taught her to put up a wall and be sceptical of new relationships. When her grandmother has had enough of her misbehaving, she decides to drop her off at her grandfather’s house. Sarah’s life is immediately put into a tailspin. Her grandfather and his friends decide to take her along on a hike to pay their last respects to her great-great grandfather. The trip also has a special secret mission. The group plans to use the trip to find proof and confirm that the Olympic National Park should be declared a national heritage site. Therefore, mining shouldn't be allowed. Out of anger at her grandfather, Sarah runs away from the group and gets lost in the forest. She falls into a hole that leads her to another world in another time. In order to survive, she must embark on a personal journey to become "one of the people." The adventure she had in another time proves crucial to the survival of the group in the forest when a big corporation intending to mine the forest proves to be a dangerous foe and will stop at nothing to attain its profit. Just like "Alice in Wonderland," did Sarah visit and live in another time or was it just a dream?
It’s an easy read and yet interesting. The story has well-developed and strong characters, and the main character, Sarah, despite her rough nature, is both sweet and lovable. One immediately falls in love with and becomes protective of Sarah’s character. I found myself enjoying every new character introduced and could easily imagine them, especially the characters in Sarah’s own personal adventure. I especially enjoyed the names Sarah had given to the characters in her dream. It was intriguing how the scenes were merged into the present and the past. The history of the Koryaks people from Kamchatka in Asia and how they are cousins with the natives of North America was quite interesting.
I wished a little more background was given about the natives, which would have made the book more enjoyable. This doesn’t take away anything from the book, though. With a bit of imagination, one can easily picture the scenes and the people. I enjoyed the book very much and found nothing to dislike. The book is well edited. I didn’t notice any errors. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
The saying "don’t judge a book by its cover" applies to this book. It’s an adventure story centred on the native people of North America and Asia, their history and origins. The book has elements of adventure, history, and a bit of fantasy and can be enjoyed by almost anyone. I recommend this book to those interested in world history and those who enjoy adventure reading. Young adults would also enjoy this book.
