Backcomb and Tattoo by Shea R Embry is a fiction book centered on four women, Aunt Mary Opal, Rachael, Jesi, and Nicole. It talked about their love, friendships, trust, and secrets. Aunt Mary Opal is a woman who was abused by her husband and had been a victim of cancer. Not wanting to relive that life of pain again, she convinced herself that she was single and completely isolated from anyone in her life. Luckily for her, things changed when she met Rachael, Jesi, and Nicole.

Aunt Mary Opal met these women at different points in their lives. Rachael, the kind and orderly one who placed everyone before herself, was committed to a marriage built on deceit. Jesi, the impatient one, was abandoned by her parents, scared to commit, and had no goal in life. Nicole, the reasonable one, was preparing to end her life. Then they all met Aunt Mary Opal and their lives changed. From then on they formed a club, did head-to-head meditations, had adventures, and were there for each other. Aunt Mary Opal was very secretive and made each of them have secrets of their own. After meeting these women, she decided that the rest of her life would be about living and not hiding. Months later, she discovered that her cancer is back and decided to keep it a secret. Would they find out?

This book is exceptional and has so many themes, emotions, and lessons fused into it. It tells how the appearance of one person can change the life of someone else. One thing I loved about this book is the way the characters are so well-developed that you can feel their emotions just by reading. While reading, I could feel their fears, their joy, sadness, and guilt. It made me connect so well with the characters that I felt I was there with them. The friendship built around these characters despite being filled with secrets is one to envy. In places where they kept secrets from each other, I always end up intrigued by how they easily lie to each other and get forgiven. This aspect of the book makes me laugh. And it's why I enjoyed it more.

Aunt Mary Opal turned out to be a very interesting character. Her fondness for secrets made her very mysterious. She's my favorite character in the book. The way she made a family with Rachael, Jesi, and Nicole despite her own failed marriage and family shows her strength. Although she left so many secrets behind, I am glad that there's a book two, The Weed Lady. After reading, there was nothing for me to hate about this book. I had my fair share of emotions while reading. Whew! Although I somehow unknowingly read book two before book one (this book), it still turned out to be thrilling and exciting. And you know what? That would be our little secret.

I enjoyed my reading of this book and therefore give it a 4 out of 4 stars. I believe it's well deserved for my rating due to my praises, and it's exceptionally well edited with no typos. I recommend it to lovers of fiction books, lovers of thrill books, and those interested in romance and LGBTQ books. This book isn't suitable for the young audience because it contains profanities and some erotic scenes.
