McDowell by William H.Coles is a literary fiction book that has two parts. The book centers around Hiram McDowell who is a surgeon by profession. Hiram is a brilliant surgeon yet a very self-centered and egocentric man who is selfish for power and authority. He is not so lucky in marriage as he marries off three times his second wife dies from breast cancer and leaves behind three children. Ann, Sophie, and Billie. Hiram later married the widow, Carole Mastriano, Carole had two daughters Tasha and Candice. Hiram gets elected as Regent to the board of directors of the International College of Surgeons. But he still wanted more and wouldn't settle until he became the president of the International College.

His quest for the top seat as the president of the IC is met with a lot of casualties along the way. Bribery, lies, and deceit finally enable him to ascend to the top position, Hiram also owns a hospital in Nepal that allegedly helps the poor and offers quality healthcare to all. Hiram's downfall would start when his grandson Jeremy in an outburst of insanity, killed twelve people including his sister, and seriously injured his mom. His attempt to commit suicide left him seriously injured and was rushed to the hospital. In an attempt to clear off his family name, Hiram would move to the hospital where his grandson was and kill him. Hiram got arrested and was sentenced to 25years for second-degree murder. A year and seven months later into his sentence he managed to escape, Constantly on the run Hiram's official journey to redemption finally begins. Hiram begins to learn the true nature of humanity by expressing life from a totally opposite to the world he was born.

One thing I really liked about the book is when H. Coles made Hiram experience both sides of real life, one in which he is really privileged and has almost everything that we may all need in life, and the other side where he has nothing and has to begin his whole life from scratch. Through this, every reader gets to appreciate everything they have in life. And it's a good learning point that we all walk different paths in life. I found nothing negative about the book.

I would like to give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars . This is majorly due to the plot, especially Hiram's character, and how H. Coles manages to bring every character to life in their own unique way.

I would recommend this book to everyone who loves literary fictional books and to everyone else who needs to learn the true nature of life and how it can equally humble us all in the end.
