Hiram McDowell is a world renowned surgeon, Regent to the board of directors of the International College of Surgeons, creator of the foundation hospital in Nepal, and an accomplished mountain climber, but he is not a very good man. Hiram has been married and divorced a few times and has 3 grown children Sophie, Ann, and Billie.

Ann's son Jeremy has always seemed somewhat off. Ann tried telling her husband that something was wrong with Jeremy, but he did not listen. When Jeremy does the unthinkable it sets the events leading up to Hiram's downfall into motion.

McDowell by author William H. Cole is a work of fiction with 264 pages and is set into 2 parts. I really liked this book. In the first part of the book I was not a fan of Hiram at all. He was a selfish womanizer who thought he was above the law. But by the end of the book Hiram grew on me and I began to sympathize with his character. The author writes from different character’s points of view, including Hiram's children and most of the key characters in the story. I think my favorite part of the book is when Sophie and Billie spend time in Nepal. I had never heard about the custom in Nepal where they isolate menstruating women. I enjoyed reading about this country I know very little about.

The second part of the book is focused on Hiram's life on the run as an escaped convict. Having to live this way causes him to have to become a completely different person. I like how at each destination Hiram runs to he meets someone that has a huge impact on his transformation. They each teach him how to be a better person in their own unique ways.

I found no errors in this book which leads me to believe it was exceptionally well edited. There is some profanity and a few sex scenes, but nothing too bad. I am rating this book 4 out of 4 stars. The reason I have given it this rating is because it was such an amazing story. It kept me hooked from beginning to end, and had no errors.

I recommend this book to adult audiences that enjoy reading books with plenty of twists and turns. I loved everything about this book. Even when I did not like Hiram I still loved to hate him. This is a book you won't want to miss. I am so glad that I decided to read it.
