Review of Man Mission
Man Mission by Eytan Uliel is a non-fiction story about a group of four friends who attended college together and always talked about traveling, going on exciting adventures, and enjoying exotic foods without any restraints. A few years later, two of the friends decide to do something different for a change after doing the same mind-numbing work day in and day out. They decide to make those past dreams into reality by setting out on a week of freedom they could not enjoy back home, with work and family responsibilities always taking priority. This was the start of 15 years of tradition, with an annual trip occurring each year. These trips were important to them as they helped these friends create a bond that became the foundation of their lifelong brotherhood as they went through difficult times. On their journeys, they encounter drug dealers, go on many bike rides, enjoy naked bathing in a hot tub, and endure the harshness of ice climbing. They partake in the grueling activity of kayaking. There is a sailing expedition that opens their eyes to what freedom feels like. They enjoy singing with drunk men years ahead of them in age while on a cycling trip and become intoxicated themselves. The friends have a frightening encounter with the largest and most ferocious animals on the planet and also enjoy traveling to the world’s most northerly city. It was 15 years that had with it joy and sorrow but also an unbreakable friendship.
What I liked about the story was the trust they had in each other because men are creatures that tend to keep everything only to themselves. It is in their nature. But these four just had a bond that transcended that unwillingness to open up, they shared their deepest darkest secrets, and because of that, there was always a shoulder to cry on when needed. I enjoyed the banter between them, the jousting of insults, and the use of the pink bracelet to emasculate the one wearing it, which was always funny.
What I did not like about the story was the amount of profanity used throughout the book, which was a little too much for me at times. I think that aspect of the book should have been dialed back a bit.
The book has an intriguing story as it shows how powerful a man can be, but it also shows how meek he can be when it comes to matters of the heart. The reader is continuously experiencing new wonders as the same place is never visited twice. The book has humor throughout, as the four friends constantly tease each other. The novel is also professionally edited. For those reasons, I rate Man Mission 4 out of 4 stars.
I would recommend Man Mission for those who enjoy reading books that have exotic places being traveled to by normal inexperienced men because this makes everything more interesting as nothing ever goes to plan. It has adventure, friendship, love, and fatherhood but also betrayal. Due to the amount of profanity, I recommend this book to people 16 years and older.
