Review of Man Mission
Man Mission
Man Mission, by Eytan Uliel, is an eventful novel about four Australian men, the narrator whose identity has not been revealed, Daniel, Eric and Sam who met in college. The novel discusses their life for the next 15 years. They have formed the tradition of an adventure trip every year. They came up with ten rules to govern their adventure. The story opens with two friends who wanted to break their boredom with their careers. Without proper planning, they decide to tour a territory in New Zealand that they know very little about. During the trip, they are faced with various challenges including an encounter with a lion. However, they are rescued by a group of drug dealers. Later, they are joined by other two schoolmates and they continue with their yearly excursion. They take their adventures as a break from their families and professional chores. Their mission also involves rituals such as wrestling and the celebration of victories won during the vocations. Years later, they get married, start their families establish their careers and do what is expected of men. They are also faced with normal challenges of life, for example, the narrator’s wife loses interest in him at some point.
On a positive note, I found the novel lively and interesting. Also, the novel addresses trends in the current life, especially among the young population. It is quite common to find young men and ladies organizing trips where they go and venture into the world. Despite the title of the book being man mission which gives the implication that most of the characters would be male, Eytan Uliel also involved women who were just doing activities similar to those done by men. Uliel is creative enough to address the major aspects of life. Major themes addressed in this book are friendship, marriage and personal growth which are part of our lives. Uliel was very creative, he made the story look real, I only realized that it was fiction when I read the cover page of the book. I did not notice any grammatical errors.
The major negative thing I noted with this book is the use of profanity. This was very common especially when Sam was talking to the narrator. On a lighter note, the title of the book "Man Mission," may not be appealing to the female gender, some may argue that it is meant for the male gender
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars since it was lively and interesting. I did not notice any grammatical errors. The major issue was the use of profanity.
I would recommend this book to people who like travel and adventures. It would also be suitable for college students as most of them are planning for their professionals and starting their families.
