At the Cusp by Sam Baggaley

“At the Cusp” by Sam Baggaley is the story of a hunter in pursuit of the buck of a lifetime. This short story takes you on a journey by providing high detail and imagery. It was very easy to get lost in this book.

I am giving this book a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. I have never been hunting, but I have always known hunters. I have heard so many hunting stories, but this one was different because it really seemed to capture the essence of the whole experience. I did not give this book a 4-star rating because I felt a little disappointed by the ending, but other than that, the book was very well written.

My least favorite part of this story was with the way that it ended. Obviously I cannot go into too much detail without spoiling the story. I will say that I felt dissatisfied with the hunter’s mood at the end of the story versus his mood at the end of chapter two. I felt like something had changed in the span of a couple weeks, and I was left wanting more information. I know that seems vague, but I feel like if you read the book you will know what I mean.

My favorite part of this story was the detail. The story was short, but it took me a few days to work through because there was so much to take in. I especially enjoyed the way the buck was portrayed. I think Sam Baggaley did a very good job painting a picture that made the reader understand why the hunter was so entranced by this one, specific creature.

I enjoyed this book. It was not a book that I would typically pick for myself, but I am very glad that I gave it a chance. I do recommend this book. Hunters and outdoorsy folks would be the target audience, but if you do not fit that mold I would still urge you to give it a read. It is a short story after all, so what do you have to lose?

In conclusion, “At the Cusp” by Sam Baggaley is the story of a hunter on an all-consuming hunt. The detail throughout the story is plentiful, and really helps you to appreciate how important the buck is to the hunter. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.
