Christopher Fried's "Whole Lot of Hullabaloo" is a must-read for any young adult looking for a thrilling, thought-provoking, and humorous read. Set in the fall of 2011 on a college campus, the book follows the story of Troy Thomas, a sophomore who finds himself caught up in a controversial incident involving his best friend, Ian. Ian arrives at an off-campus costume party dressed as a character from "Miami Vice" in blackface, causing offense to a fellow student who threatens to take the incident to the local media.

The incident serves as a catalyst for a series of events exploring the complexities of identity politics and the community's reactions. Along the way, Troy encounters a diverse cast of characters, including militants, a popular preacher, and a professor with their own agendas. The book is filled with dark humor and nods to 80s and 90s pop culture, making it a great choice for fans who enjoy a mix of nostalgia and contemporary fiction.

A notable aspect of the book is its diverse cast of characters, all of whom have their own unique and interesting stories. From Milly, a first-generation Korean American pursuing her dream of becoming an actress, to Lola, a young Hispanic woman struggling with shame over not being able to speak Spanish, the characters are well-developed and help to bring the creation of the book to life. The descriptions of the various locations and characters are vivid and engaging, making it easy for me to become fully absorbed in the story. Personally, I found it very interesting that I could visualize all the events in the story. When a book can keep me fully engaged and captivated from start to finish, it's clear that the writer has created something truly exceptional. I was drawn into the story and felt genuine emotion as I followed the plot.

The clever use of irony and humor to address sensitive topics such as race and identity was a standout aspect of the book. It was an effective way to tackle difficult subjects and kept me engaged throughout the entire read. The book effectively balances levity and gravity, creating a fascinating and intellectually stimulating read.

In terms of themes, the book explores the complexities of identity and the ways in which our perceptions of ourselves and others are shaped by societal expectations and cultural influences. The characters' struggles to find their place within the community and assert their own identities are relatable and poignant. Overall, I would give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars for its thought-provoking exploration of sensitive themes and its clever use of humor and irony.
