Hiram McDowell, a haughty, affluent doctor, is the protagonist of William H. Coles' book McDowell. Although affable on the outside, he is frigid and unkind to those who are close to him. His influence in the community, though, helps him maintain his lovely façade until he starts to lose control. His perfectly planned life starts to unravel as he is accused of scientific wrongdoing. The reader is held in suspense as a spectator to the doctor's major fall due to the falsehoods, damning deeds, and terrible blunders of McDowell.

A 5 out of 5 is appropriate for this book. From one viewpoint to the next, Mr. Coles writes with ease. Even though the point of view shifts often (about every couple of chapters), the reader is still able to appreciate the novel despite this. In actuality, the many viewpoints emphasize various interpretations of the struggle. These differences are fascinating and provide the reader with a unique perspective on every aspect.

The vivid detail that was there throughout the novel was my favorite part. As I read, I felt as if I could nearly see the happenings. I liked how the book begins with action to grab the reader's attention right away; I couldn't put it down! Additionally, the tale moves along at a pace that seems believable. Characters undergo dynamic transformations in ways that are both genuine and captivating. The novel sometimes reads more like a memoir than a tale. McDowell is exceptional in this regard since I have never felt this emotion when reading another book.

I would advise lovers of drama and suspense to check out McDowell. To maintain interest, there is always some friction. Naturally occurring dramatic highs and lows hold the reader's attention and heighten the book's most suspenseful passages. The serious tone and extensive language in this book may be difficult for some readers; therefore, I would also suggest it to older readers. Since some of the issues, Dr. McDowell encounters are political, readers without a strong interest in or understanding of politics may find it difficult to follow the plot at certain moments.

But I think everyone ought to give McDowell a chance. The novel's message is crucial and applicable to all audiences. The book was exceptionally well edited. Younger readers may still understand the novel's premise and even learn a few new words along the way. Reading McDowell may help all readers develop intellectually and emotionally.
