McDowell by William H. Coles is a page-turner story featuring a man’s journey to self-realization. Hiram McDowell, the main character, experiences a rollercoaster lifestyle that makes him realize his shortcomings, which he never saw before.

Hiram is a respected surgeon and the father of three—Ann, Sophie, and Billie. He has climbed Mount Everest and many others. In addition, Hiram is the founder of a hospital in Nepal that helps the less fortunate. However, despite all those achievements, Hiram has a big challenge with marriage. He divorced more than one wife and finally focused entirely on his career and success. Hiram makes a deal with Michael, a board member of the International College of Surgeons, but fails to keep his promise to Michael after being elected President of the Board of Regents at the school. Hiram’s career begins to wobble when he becomes the President’s nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services. Murder claims and fraud are among the things that resurface at the peak of his career. Will he find a way out?

I liked the motivation behind Hiram’s life story. From being a wealthy man to a homeless man on the run, Hiram’s story has taught me that anything can happen and that I should be ready to cope with pain when it comes. Also, during his stays in the wilderness, he realizes the importance of being close to people. Of all the people he interacted with while running from the authorities, many challenged him with ideas that made him see himself and others in a new way he hadn’t seen before. For example, Maud reinterpreted the whole idea of success very differently from what Hiram thought success was. All those lessons Hiram learned at his lowest moment will also impact readers in some way.

Furthermore, I enjoyed the book’s plot twists and bits of suspense. It was fascinating how McDowell’s luxurious lifestyle took a u-turn, which I had not expected. That made me love the book more. I also applaud William Coles for his fantastic story flow. Each chapter in the book was a staircase on which the story’s sweetness was ascending. Additionally, the author used simple vocabulary that is easy to understand. Also, the themes he highlighted in the book, such as marriage, parenting, revenge, crime, and betrayal, are relatable to real life.

I did not encounter any negative aspects in this book. It was exceptionally well-edited, and I disliked nothing about it. Therefore, I rate McDowell 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend this book to fathers and people who see themselves as humanitarians. McDowell’s life adventure story has a lot of dos and don’ts for them.

Hiram McDowell's tragic downfall is an important lesson indeed. It was saddening to see how he used others as a stepping stone without concern for their wellbeing. The fact that he did not keep his promise to Michael was another proof that he could do anything to attain success.
