The dream of a life of adventure and excitement that we have growing up tends to give way as we realize the responsibility of adulthood. Vacations and flights to exotic lands are replaced by holding down a job, maintaining marriages, changing diapers, etc. The protagonist of the book had found himself in this state. He was in a dull desk job at a law firm, sluggishly moving through life. This was until his college friend, Sam, called him passionately insisting they take the boys’ trip they had envisioned all those years ago. This ignited a spark in him and the idea took over his mind. For the next fifteen years, the protagonist would go on an annual one-week trip with his best friends, Sam, Daniel, and Alec. Man Mission is a book of the incredible adventures and changes they experience in their lives.

I enjoyed the way their excursions were told. The story was filled with humor and was in great detail. Their interactions and experiences with different cultures, physical challenges, and emotional states were well expressed. Eytan Uliel takes his time to bring understanding to the reader. The parallel drawn throughout the book between the differing aspects of being a man was engaging. On one side was the joy, physical injuries, and discomfort of their annual trip. On the other, there was the pleasure, pressure, and sacrifice of being part of a family. Both are challenging aspects of life.

The bond between the friends was also a joy to read. They had a great deal of mutual respect, understanding, and care for one another. Each character was explored thoroughly such that the reader had adequate context on their lives, their successes, and their failures. There was an openness and ability to reveal themselves fully to their friends. It was refreshing and delightful to see, as it is not commonly attributed to man. As a result, the book explores and stimulates the reader on how they view certain aspects of manhood.

There was nothing I disliked about the book. It was enjoyable and easy to read. The author did an excellent job of writing an engaging and informative story. Readers will become invested in the story and develop their views on what manhood is.

I give Man Mission by Eytan Uliel a rating of 5 out of 5 stars because it was entertaining, exceptionally well-written, and professionally edited. It reads as someone retelling the story of their life.

I would recommend this book to anyone beyond the age of 16. The ideas contained within the book will open the reader’s eyes to manhood. It may be a book based on manhood, but it is also suitable for women.
