“The pickup truck hurtles down a dirt road in rural New Zealand. In the back, it’s just me, four loaded guns, and some kilo bricks of drugs. I’m going to die, I think. And not for the first time today.” That’s the opening line of Chapter 1 of Man Mission, which gives an incitement to thrilling yet daring journeys yet to come. The book is about four men, Eytan, Daniel, Sam, and Alec, on an adventure through different countries. “Man mission” is the name of a yearly travel tradition Sam and Eytan had come up with back in law school. At the beginning of the adventure trip, only the duo takes part, but later Daniel and Alec join them. In addition to adventure, the book also addresses the lives of the quartet: their struggle to find career stability, marriage, and commitment, as well as their attainment of the title father. The main theme of the book is friendship.

The positive aspects of the book were the well-constructed dialogue and first-person narration, which gave the book its uniqueness as well as a personal touch, making it easier to connect with it. The addition of maps at the beginning of each chapter to enable the reader to navigate the routes traveled throughout the chapter made its understanding easier. I also liked the use of two quotes (the first one from a known figure and the second one from a bible verse) at the beginning of each chapter that were related to that chapter. The author described each setting, destination, and scenery clearly in such a way that I felt part of the journey. The character development was impressive. Major development throughout the book was properly done; it led to the drastic changes.

The negative aspects of the book were the improper order of events. The back and forth style intertwined the stories of the trips with the lives of the characters back at home, which led to scenes being abruptly cut off and the next one starting. I also felt some scenes bordered on toxic masculinity, especially when a character was hurt but didn’t want to quit the journey since it was going to hurt their masculine ego. Although the narration was clear, the addition of pictures would have enhanced imagination.

I’d rate Man Mission by Eytan Uliel 5 out of 5 stars since it’s well written, well edited, and had no errors. The use of facts, fiction, and comedy made it entertaining to read.

I’d recommend the book to an older audience, especially those who enjoy travelogues and memoirs. It contains a fair amount of profanity, so anyone sensitive to that should keep off this book.
