Review of Man Mission
Man Mission by Eytan Uliel was an interesting book. What does friendship constitute? Can people still be good friends after a long period of not interacting? The book answers these questions as we follow the lives of four guy friends, who go on various adventures and bond and grow with each passing year. The story is narrated in first person from the perspective of one of the main characters in the friend group. It begins as our narrator meets Sam, a guy on campus, and befriends him. The friend group grows to include two other guys .
One day, two of the guys, Alec and Daniel, come up with an interesting, adventurous idea that the guys don’t follow through on until much later. The idea is that the guys visit an exotic location annually and participate in various activities while interacting with various cultures, then they can return home to their everyday lives.
When they pursue the idea several years later, it is the beginning of a discovery of the various new places and memories that the four guys can get to experience. These trips are filled with outdoorsy activities and unique experiences that bring the friends closer together every year. It is something they often look forward to.
The story is told entirely from the narrator’s perspective. Through him, the reader gets a glimpse into these people's lives and their relationship dynamics. Through the narrator, the reader also gets glimpses into the guys' lives back home. Their relationships, their marriages, as well as their highs and lows. I liked this aspect of the book. It gave the story a good flow from beginning to end. I also liked the pacing of the book. Between the stories about the guys’ adventures and their ordinary lives, the author manages to create a seamless transition, making reading the story easier.
I liked the characters in the book. Each of them had distinct characteristics and felt like ordinary, everyday people. I liked how the author showcased how their relationships changed over the years and how the trips impacted their lives. The author's storytelling style is easy to follow, and I did not have any trouble following the story as a reader.
I also enjoyed the many positive themes of the book. The author showcases male friendship in a way that is healthy and heartwarming at the same time. I enjoyed reading about the rapport between the guys and how they supported each other through difficult situations. It challenges current issues such as toxic masculinity and how men can sustain friendships without fearing ridicule. There is nothing about this book that I did not like.
I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars rating as I enjoyed reading it very much. Another reason for this rating is that I found no grammatical errors, and the book seems exceptionally well-edited. I recommend this book to any adult looking for a good, easy book about friendship, adventure, and life.
