Travesty of Justice is a romance drama of Heather Butler and is inspired by a true story. With her personal connection to Nova Scotia and own experience to the world of fashion, she creates this believable world with attention-grabbing plot twists and lovable and relatable characters such as Nicole and Samuel.
Samuel is a struggling African student doctor. He is nearing the end of his studies in Nova Scotia when he meets a beautiful blonde girl, Nicole, on a dance floor and their hearts start beating together. She is a born-and-bred Nova Scotian nurse and with their similar interests, they fall madly in love. However, his visa, their families and money issues create obstacles which they have to overcome. They fair quite well against these obstacles, but as their relationship and love grows, it becomes apparent that certain secrets can’t be locked up in a closet forever and that they should rather take out their skeletons and dance with them.
The characters are realistically drawn; giving the reader enough insight into the character’s personality without giving away too much of their backstory. They are three dimensional and interestingly put together. Nicole feels like each girl’s best friend, where one laughs and cries with her through the obstacles. Samuel is this tall, dark and handsome heartthrob who has these undeniably realistic problems with his work and culture.
Though there are a few spelling and grammar mistakes and one instance in the book that I felt the author could have made more of an effort to use the scene to her advantage, it does not make the story unbearable and there is definitely enough twists and struggles to keep the reader entertained.
The story-line is very realistic and focuses on current situations, that all of us have either witnessed or endured ourselves. I must warn readers that Heather does write the novel in such a manner that you as the reader get so frustrated with the injustice inflicted on the characters, that I almost threw my laptop across the room. These are real life issues and it is refreshing to see someone write it in such a manner, spitting open the lies we tell ourselves to get to sleep at night.
The book was a bit different from what I expected it to be, but in a good way. Though the author does linger on some issues a while, the reader can’t help but read past these boring bits to see what the characters’ next move will be; whether Samuel and Nicole’s love will stand through all the obstacles thrown their way. For this I give the book 3 out of 4 stars and would definitely read the sequel The Magic in the little Gemstone Kiosk.
