Review of Man Mission
Man Mission by Eytan Uliel is a book full of adventures, true friendship, and life lessons woven together with humour. It is about a group of friends who occasionally embark on an adventure where they can breathe fresh air and spend a couple of days without worrying about work or office calls. It was their escape from real-life struggles. These adventurous young men met in law school and, through a series of events, formed a close bond that allowed them to develop into their best selves.
The book begins with the author huddled in the back of a speeding truck with guns and illegal drugs. The author is sure he is going to die, and while the reader is anticipating what follows next, he takes you to a flashback of the events proceeding to that very moment.
The events on their various trips had a cascading impact on the characters Sam, Daniel, Alec, and the narrator, who are currently travelling the world. This mission established rules and regulations, and it was an opportunity for the men to hang out, enjoy nature, and talk about their lives.
The first adventure in New Zealand did not go as planned because one of them came home with a torn ligament. Then it was Japan, followed by Australia. The accounts of injuries never got in the way of doing and enjoying what they loved. They went on long hikes, cycling, and kayaking. Each year, they went to a faraway country and picked a specific adventure. I could see the four young men grow older. They got married, had children and careers, and even got divorced. They maintained this culture for fifteen years. During those fifteen years, they faced challenges and overcame them.
One of the things that I liked is that the author started the chapters with motivational quotes. At the end of each chapter, there was a yearly summary of the events, like a recap, before proceeding to the next chapter. The author presented societal expectations of a man; towards the end, the four friends showed their secrets, which shows that men can be vulnerable and seek help. This book is emotionally rich and a powerful presentation of reality, as it made me think about the hardships on the other side.
I am fairly interested in the memoir genre, so I know it can get boring quickly, but this book was a pleasant surprise. The character of Sam is probably my favourite, as he provides emotional and physical support to his friends whenever they need it. Moreover, the author used simple vocabulary and writing to make it more enjoyable and easy to understand.
The book spoke about the different places in a very descriptive and imaginative way that made me understand the scenery of each area they visited. I appreciated the maps in the book, even though I cannot advocate their accuracy.
If I had to knit-pick, the font style kept changing throughout the book, which was a tad irritating as it somehow messed with my reading flow.
Due to the aforementioned reasons as well as exceptionally well editing; Man Mission is worth every single star in 5 out of 5 stars.
I recommend it to a mature audience interested in tourism and adventure stories and readers interested in a thrilling story that features true friendship. It contains a good amount of profanity and some sexual content hence, reader discretion is advised.
