Review of Man Mission
Eytan Uliel's Man Mission chronicles the incredible odyssey of a quartet of men over fifteen years. During their college years, these four friends created a ritual of embarking on an annual adventure trip that lasted a week.
The book narrates the remarkable adventures of four men - the protagonist, Daniel, Alec, and Sam - as they embark on extraordinary excursions around the world. Having known each other since their college days, the friends remained close for many years, sharing life experiences, starting families, and pursuing successful careers. Over fifteen years, they encounter various challenges, ranging from family to career-related issues, while engaging in a diverse range of outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, cycling, kayaking, and climbing. Their travels take them to fascinating destinations such as Japan, Australia, Fiji, Spain, Thailand, South Korea, South Africa, Vietnam, the USA, Taiwan, Peru, and Iceland. Along with thrilling action and laughter, "Man Mission" offers insights for men seeking personal growth and fulfilment, deconstructing and updating the traditional "man code."
The book delves into the themes of adventure, camaraderie, marriage, and ultimately, self-motivation. What appeals to me most is the author's unfiltered depiction of a man's perspective on various life issues. I find Sam's character particularly endearing, as he exemplifies the kind of unwavering support that true friends should provide, regardless of the circumstances. When the protagonist's marriage was on the verge of collapse and others were quick to judge, Sam was a source of encouragement. He also stood by Daniel and Alec during their struggles, even as he dealt with his issues.
There is nothing I disliked about this book; it is incredibly engaging, and I believe it has the potential to make a fantastic movie. I highly recommend this book to men who may be searching for their life's purpose, and struggling to articulate their emotions, as well as to women who may find it challenging to understand men.
I gave this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. It offers a potent, humorous, and poignant portrayal of contemporary masculinity, as experienced by four regular Australian men. If you are a woman who has ever felt puzzled or bewildered by the enigmatic workings of the male psyche (which may or may not be so enigmatic), this is a book you will thoroughly enjoy. It is a page-turner that can be easily consumed in one sitting. Additionally, I was impressed with the exceptionally well-done editing and lack of errors in the book.
