"Up From the Blue" is about a woman named Tillie. The book goes back and forth from her childhood when she was 8 to when she is 6 weeks pregnant. Tillie has to face the painful memories of her childhood when her dad comes to the hospital when she's pregnant.
Faced with a severely depressed mom and an angry father during her childhood, Tillie is much different from her other classmates. She grew up with very few friends, most of her classmates made fun of her. The few friends that she did make were similar to her situation.
Her very 1st best friend was her neighbor. Who tried to help Tillie find her mother. Later the girl turned out like the other girls she went to school with so the friendship ended quick between the both of them. Fortonutely Tillie had made another friend in school much like her. They were both known as "outcasts". Tillie's friend was the only colored girl in the class so she stood out and was shy.
Tillie later learns that her father has been trying to keep the family together while growing up. Filled in with lies and no help Tillie and her brother began to dislike their parents. The brother grew distant from the family since both of the parents refused to be there for him when he really needed them.
This book filled with tradegy, trauma, and love is a heartbreaking story.
