Review of Man Mission
Man Mission by Eytan Uliel sees four men come together every year to go on an expedition of their choosing. This mainly range from kayaking, hiking, and bicycle riding, all while exploring new and beautiful scenery. Their manly capabilities are put to the test. The one who displays the least manly traits is given the 'pink bracelet' of shame. During these adventures, they sustain injuries, meet dangerous people, make new friends, and talk about troubling issues. They get the chance to lay off work, take some time to themselves, and not have to worry about their parental or marital duties. Off these gateways, they lead boring lives doing the same things over and over. Their lives catch up with them, and one struggles to find a marriage partner while building himself financially. Another is having problems with his wife and is on the verge of divorce. One of them loses a parent and lastly, the other is dissatisfied in his marriage. All these and more are challenges that the four face, and together, they overcome all that life throws at them. Other important matters presented are career change and job dissatisfaction.
The author describes so many beautiful scenes and the reader gets a picture of the places described. I thought this was awesome. The background information of how the four met and came up with 'man mission' is presented, which I found meaningful as I was able to follow the book's unwinding much easier. The introduction of the 'wives committee' and how they have to consent to their trips, is commendable. It portrays reality and gives a picture of wives in the real world.
I thought some information given by the author was not really necessary. For instance, the introduction of the characters of Alec's parents, the main character's secret affair and the conversation on vasectomy.
I rate the book 5 out of 5 stars. It is exceptionally well edited. The author did a great job in detailing various locations around the world, and he did so perfectly. I also liked that their are a number of these locations. It really tells that the author has done a lot of traveling. I sure envy the guy.
I recommend this book to all men above the age of 25. It resonates with working men who fend for their families. It speaks great volumes about friendship and the importance of men sticking out for one another. Adventure lovers are sure to find the book captivating as it is full of adventure. Married people should also read this book as it shows some problems encountered in marriage and how to go about solving them.
