“I was taught that to be a man, I needed to wear a mask, to smile and look strong, no matter what I’m feeling inside”. This powerful statement resonated with me, shedding light on the struggles many men face in being authentic and true to themselves. Man Mission by Eytan Uliel is a work of fiction, which depicts the journey of four college friends. The protagonist and his friend Sam, while in university, decided that they would go on an annual adventure filled trip, this was the birth of Man Mission. While the first trip include just Sam and the protagonist, they later included their other two friend Daniel and Alec.

In the earlier years, the trips served as a bonding time for the friends, during which they would participate in 'manly' activities such as hiking, kayaking, cycling, and trekking. As the years went by, the trips began to occur in various stages of the men’s lives, from getting married, starting new jobs, to having children. At these stages, the trips became more than just bonding experiences; they turned into major escapes from their day-to-day lives and provided them with time to reflect on the lives they were living. The activities they participated in and the people they met on these trips helped them gain perspective and reflect on their thoughts.

I liked that the story is completely focused on men and their inner thoughts and struggles. The book highlights themes such as friendship, personal growth, regret, and reflection. This book does a great job of showcasing the protagonist's emotions and his navigation through life. It highlighted the importance of friendship as it provides companionship and support. During their trips, the friends provided support and comfort to each other through their shared experiences. Regret and reflection became prominent themes in the final chapters. The protagonist began reflecting on the choices he had made throughout his life and started accepting the associated consequences. The trips gave him time for introspection, allowing him to confront feelings of disappointment, sadness, and guilt, leading him to ponder 'if only…'.

The story also depicts the protagonist questioning societal expectations of how men should act and what it truly means to be a man. I like that the story is told from the protagonist POV, which allows the reader to see the story from his eyes. I also liked that the story also highlighted the importance of family. The men realized that while it is fun to go on these adventure filled trips, coming home to their families would always make them the happiest. The protagonist concluded that his ultimate mission was simply to find happiness and cherish the small moments with his friends and family. I couldn't find any flaws in this book. I thoroughly enjoyed the narrative perspective and the thought-provoking themes it presented. Moreover, the author's inclusion of chapter summaries and insightful quotes throughout the book enhanced the overall reading experience.

I would rate this book a five out of five stars. It seems to be professionally edited, I did not notice any errors. This humor-filled book is recommended for readers who want to enjoy a good story. This book did contain profanities and is not suitable for young readers.
