Dean Koontz

Post by Muna »

Well, I used to like Dean Koontz two years ago, but now that I read around 8 or 9 books by him, 3 of which are recent, I found that he went beyond style to repeating himself. What I mean is, we all know each writer has their style in repeating certain actions, words, and so on, but he completely went beyond that, and it's annoying because I used to like his books, and now I can't get myself to read a word he writes.

Did it ever happen with other authors you know of?

I just came back to Koontz after several years. The first few books I read, such as Servants of Twilight & Lightening, were original and full of supernatural suspense. Then his books got very dark. Now I've noticed he's become more spiritual and introspective, with quite a bit of humor and wit in his recent books. The Odd Thomas collection is a bit grating, but The Husband & Darkest Evening of the Year were taut thrillers.

Yes - I agree. Koontz has said he doesn't outline his stories and sometimes it shows. As though he loses his way halfway thru.

Try the Frankenstein series. Classic Dean Kootnz style but the story stands on its one. I get what your saying about him though, luckily I don't religiously read his books so I haven't been too disappointed. Besides the two Frankenstein books out (and now impatiently awaiting the third!) the last one I read was Out of the Corner of his eye and I loved that. Phantoms remains my favorite though.

John Grishman did that to me. I loved his first five, then I got bored. I haven't read any of his new stuff.

I've only noticed Dean Koontz recently because some of his themes are similar to what I read, but I don't know where to start. Could anyone suggest a place for me to start with his books, like his first or just his best ones?
