Often, we meticulously plan our lives, aspiring to achieve the very best. However, life can take unexpected turns, deviating from our carefully crafted plans. Understanding that life is a continuous learning and self-improvement journey shaped by our past experiences is crucial. This book narrates the story of David Graham, a man whose professional journey leads him to a teaching position in Algeria.

Drawn Into Danger, authored by Keith Costelloe, recounts the journey of David Graham, a Drama graduate who encountered a fateful incident in 1978 when he missed a crucial teaching job interview. Struggling to secure employment, David's fortunes took a turn when his activist friend, Steve, who also happened to be a manager in the movie industry, offered him an acting role. However, David's insatiable desire to explore the world eventually led him to accept a teaching position in Algeria. In Algeria, David assumed the role of an English teacher appointed by the Minister of Education to instruct high school students in the language. In this captivating North African country, David's path intertwined with individuals like Moussa, a medical student; Elizabeth, a fellow teacher; Seamus, an Irish gentleman; and Captain Touati and Farid. How these newfound acquaintances assisted David and the adversities he encountered during his time in Algeria are unveiled throughout the compelling 234 pages of the book.

I enjoyed some aspects of the book. One of the valuable lessons I learned from the life of David Graham is that there is no such thing as a perfect plan in life. However, it's essential to remain adaptable and resourceful in challenging situations, as demonstrated when David Graham missed his interview but persevered and eventually secured a job as a high school teacher in Algeria. Furthermore, I was captivated by the author's vivid descriptions of the natural environment and the delightful food they experienced during their adventures. For instance, on page 148, the author mentions the mouthwatering dishes they savored, including potatoes, chickpeas, and roasted chicken. Similarly, on page 163, they enjoyed the delectable combination of fresh fish, tomatoes, and raw onions. Anyone with a passion for food would undoubtedly relish reading this book.

Some aspects of the book did not resonate with me. The abundance of characters was overwhelming, and some seemed disconnected from their assigned titles, potentially confusing readers. For example, the author presents Moussa as a medical student, but throughout the book, Moussa's involvement primarily revolves around political activities rather than medical pursuits. Moreover, Moussa's assistance to David and Elizabeth in seeking revenge against Beau appears to be unrelated to her supposed role as a medical student.

David Graham holds the top spot as my favorite character in this book due to his remarkable aptitude for discovering solutions, even amidst challenging circumstances during his job search. I found no mistakes, so it is extraordinarily well-edited. Considering the aspects of the book I enjoyed, I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend this book to history enthusiasts seeking a compelling narrative about a man's journey from missed job opportunities to discovering genuine friendship and love.

Lots of times it is hard to see “the forest for the trees.” David seems to be very adept at discovering good things even though it’s not exactly what he thought he was getting. Thanks!

I equally agree that a perfect plan in life doesn't exist, but its important to at least have a plan.

The ideal person - person with a plan who is quick to accept the present situation and improvise, just like the character David Graham here does. Sounds like an interesting read. Thanks for your detailed review.
