Review of The Key to Circus-Mom Highway
Jesse Chasen, a loud-mouthed, dissatisfied bartender and tattoo artist, was carrying out her regular Tuesday shift at a strip club when she received the phone call that would change her life as she knew it. Jennifer McMahon lived an outwardly perfect life, but the worries plaguing her meant she had no time to heed strange requests from unknown callers. Still, she found herself relenting as Jesse managed to convince her. Jack Babineaux was okay with his life as it was, although he had a few demons he was struggling with. When the two ladies showed up at his workplace, he resisted, but ultimately, they overpowered him.
In The Key to Circus-Mom Highway by Allyson Rice, these three characters, connected by a single cord, would embark on a journey that would lead them to different places and people, filled with revelations and near-death experiences. They would need to help each other through their problems and create a deeper bond than any of them would have thought. Circuses, alligators, drag clubs, blind people who surprisingly saw a lot, emotional truckers, and picnics in hearses would all feature in this crazy journey. There would also be a final surprise waiting for them at the end — the most shocking of all.
This book was very difficult to put down. The author weaved a very intriguing tale from the first page, each sentence making you want to read the next. The author's writing alone kept me glued to the pages, as her style was engaging, imaginative, humorous, and authentic. I loved every second of this book and how she did justice to the story. The book had a lot of weaving plot points, flashbacks, and unexpected developments. Yet, it did not feel confusing or tacky at any point. It was effortless to be carried along.
Apart from the author's writing, the storyline was unique and funny. The adventures of the characters (permit me to call them "the three musketeers") were fun, and it felt like I could experience it along with them. The story did not veer off into shallow comedy but had some solemn elements that gave it depth. It was well balanced and had much to teach about patience, understanding, and forgiveness.
Despite how different they were, I could relate with the characters, and I found my opinions of some of them changing as the book went on and the characters developed. The author brought them to life, and it felt like they jumped out at me from the pages. They turned what would have otherwise been a boring road trip into an entertaining story.
More conservative readers may want to approach this book cautiously, as it incorporates same-sex relationships. It also contains some traumatic elements like rape, sexual assault, and loss that might be triggering. These elements do not detract from the excellent writing and intriguing story that unfolds. However, sensitive readers may want to be prepared before reading.
The book was professionally edited, as I found only two minor errors. I found nothing to dislike about this book. Therefore, I'd rate it five out of five stars and recommend it to lovers of family drama, comedy, and road-trip-style stories.
