Review of I’m A Rotten Son

[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "I'm A Rotten Son" by Randy Boucher.]
I’m a Rotten Son by Randy Boucher is about Scott’s story narrated by his close friend and confidant Trevor. It is a heart-wrenching story that delineates the life of a man who came from a dysfunctional family, was a member of a cult, and struggled with his identity.
Scott married Elizabeth but often felt empty despite loving her. He ended up divorcing his wife after six years despite the relationship bringing forth a baby named Justin. He also came out of the closet and declared himself gay. The divorce led him to lose custody of his son and visitation rights. It destroyed him as he loved his son dearly. Little did he know that he was in for a rollercoaster ride.
Justin grew old and married Jesse, a woman Trevor best describes as a ‘Trapper.’ While Justin was totally different from his wife, he failed to see the flawed side of Jesse. Scott tried to warn his son about the red flags to no avail. Did someone mention that love is blind?
Narrated from the third-person perspective, I’m a Rotten Son takes the reader to the realms of love, manipulation, and family. Through Jesse, I witnessed what a manipulative person can do; everything revolves around them. Scott, on the other hand, imbues the spirit of friendship and dictates the potency of love; it is forbearing and never gives up. In his touching letter to Justin, he describes the effects of living in denial and the consequences of his actions. The book ultimately shows the power of relentless love.
I'm a Rotten Son is a moving and educational read that provides a glimpse into the life of a family man. The author's ability to create relatable characters allows the reader to connect with the story. The reader will shed tears for Scott, who is presented as a caring and future-oriented man. Jesse, however, seems to enter the fray to fight the good that Scott stands for. However, the book is not without its comedic moments. The reader will chuckle as Trevor describes his inability to hold on to secrets. The book is a well-rounded read that will entertain and enlighten the reader.
I didn’t find any flaw in this emotive novel. I laughed and cried concurrently. It not only painted an image of love in my mind, but it also dissected the abyss of hate-driven individuals. I encourage anyone struggling with an identity crisis to check out Randy Boucher’s novel. Weight-sensitive individuals should proceed with caution, however. You will also find some nuggets of parenting wisdom therein. I rate I’m a Rotten Son 4 out of 5. I deducted a star because I flagged a couple of grammatical errors. Though minor, they need to be addressed.
