A storm is howling outside when Tom responds to an unexpected knock on his door. In the open doorway stands a young teenage girl dripping wet and for all intents and purposes, lost. In this manner Tom learns he has a granddaughter. Sarah steps into his life full of attitude and despair. Goes to show that life can truly change in a moment's notice.
This is the story of a journey, into the wilderness, into oneself and into connection with others. Each of the characters is seeking their place in the world. As they share their struggles, they come to find their common bond. At first glance, we see Sarah as a lost waif, but her courage and wisdom shine through. Who, we wonder, is leading whom?
This book encourages us to ponder the historical possibilities of the origin of man. Did early man first exist in Africa then travel north, only later appearing on the North American continent? Or are the legends of the Native Americans correct when they posit their existence on this continent since the beginning of time? How are myth and legend tied to verbal history that has been passed from generation to generation? What are the contributions and limitations of scientific data? The questions are both numerous and provocative.
I really enjoyed this book. The author's descriptions were visceral; I felt like I could see and hear all that was being chronicled. The images haunt me and I continue to be awed by the power and beauty of nature. Sarah's vision was compelling. Her accounting left me considering the spiritual experience inherent in dreams and visions. I find that even after finishing this book, there is much that stays with me. It is like a relationship with a good friend. I think I'll find the second book in the series.
On a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 as low and 5 as high, I rate this book as a 5 out of 5. I understand that there may be some people who would be uncomfortable with the conversation about the origin of man. I leave them to rate this book as they see fit. I think this book would be appropriate for ages young adult and up.
