[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "The Caddie Who Played with Hickory" by John Coyne.]
Tommy O’Shea is a caddy at Midlothian Country Club. He is a farm boy and dreams of going to medical school. It is 1946 and the golf club is located outside of Chicago, Illinois. A great golfer is set to visit the country club. He will play a round of golf on historic clubs that are made of hickory wood. A new caddy named Cornell suddenly shows up and begins to mentor Tommy. He comes with a mysterious past that unravels as the book unfolds. He teaches Tommy how to play on the old hickory golf clubs. The personal drama of the characters all comes to a head in an epic last round of golf.
The Caddie Who Played with Hickory is written by John Coyne. It is an exceptional book. There were engaging character stories, romance, enemies, and mysterious pasts. Even someone who does not like golf can enjoy this book. Tommy comes of age in this novel. He deals with complex relationships and class issues. The character’s relationship dramas kept me interested right until the last page.
This book is very detailed about golf. The last round takes many chapters. Every shot is discussed in detail. There is also a detailed history of the sport of golf and the craft of making hickory golf clubs. Many pages are devoted to historical golfers, their careers, and their lifestyles. Non-golfers may find the details boring.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars for being an exceptionally well-edited novel with memorable characters. I did not note any errors. It was a surprisingly pleasant and interesting read.
I recommend this book to all mature readers who enjoy a good story. It is most appealing to readers who like golf. I recommend this book to mature and open-minded readers. There are stories of alcohol consumption, adultery, and assault.
