Somebody’s Watching You by Robin D’Amato is a thriller that kept me reading well into the night. Melody and Jeff seemed like the perfect couple until he became depressed. Then one day he came home from a drive and seemed to be returning to his natural self. That is, all but that unnatural smile. Jeff had met Floyd, a member of the Church of Philomathics. Melody would do anything to get her husband back, so she started reading the massive amounts of literature that Jeff and Floyd brought to her. It turned out that the Church of Philomathics was a cult very similar to the Branch Davidians, Jonestown, and Scientology. Once you’re in it, they want to keep you in it, and they want you to recruit others. Melody felt like a guy with oversized, black-framed glasses, and a plaid coat was watching her. Many plaid-coat guys were watching her.

What I liked best about Somebody’s Watching You is the extent to which Melody would go to protect her husband. I also liked the references to and about Long Island, Garden City, Floral Park, Hicksville, Manhattan, New York City, and East Village. Before his depression, Jeff had been a DJ. The couple knew trivia about all kinds of music and could relate to some obscure pieces. I liked Ms. D’Amato’s style of telling what Melody was thinking. I always like to learn something when I read. I learned that pineapples are a symbol of hospitality.

There was nothing to dislike about this book. It got me hooked from page one.

This book was very well edited. I found only one error. It appeared that a word was left out. Other than that, it was perfect. I rate this book as five out of five stars. I give this high rating due to the way that it kept me interested to the very end. It was realistic. This could happen to you. It has happened to others.

I recommend this book for adults who like thrillers and mysteries. I don’t recommend it to young people due to the sexual content. You’ll have to read Somebody’s Watching You to find out whether Melody is successful, or she gets indoctrinated.
