Man Mission by Eytan Uliel takes us on a series of adrenaline-filled adventures with the unnamed protagonist and his closest friends. Uliel’s novel spans 15 years of trips, each to disconnect from the everyday hardships of adulthood and the chance to push themselves past their limits. As their lives change as they pass from their twenties into their thirties, the missions prove to be an escape, rejuvenation, and a chance for self-discovery. The novel embodies the idea that life is a journey and that there is no one right way to travel it.

Uliel’s Man Mission is broken into a beginning, middle, and end, chronicling the protagonist’s journey toward true happiness, self-confidence, and acceptance. Each chapter focuses on a mission and is accompanied by a map and a tongue-in-cheek summary that highlights the trip and experience and allows the reader to see what was vital to the characters for that particular mission.

When first starting the novel the characters can be seen as young, macho, and sometimes misogynistic. While it can be a bit off-putting at times these traits are used to show character development over the years and missions as the protagonist and his friends reflect and grow as men, friends, husbands, and fathers. The characters are honest and Uliel does not seek to sugarcoat their actions or behaviours, but instead shines a light on both the assets and flaws of each of the men.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I give this rating because the adventures, the locations, and the discoveries leave you wanting to know more and to continue to explore on both a personal and global level with the protagonist. The adventures were well written and exceptionally well edited, allowing for beautiful descriptions of locations and cultures and natural interactions between friends.

I recommend this book to readers who enjoy reading about travel, adventure, and honest life experiences. I would warn potential readers that there is minor vulgarity and some descriptions of animal death. However, neither is used gratuitously.
