Not Dead Yet by Mike Fletcher at first comes across as a bizarre caption; almost like the weak but triumphant cry of a survivor. Upon an extensive read, it turns out to be a collection of thought-provoking narratives in the words of senior citizens, who refuse to be banished to the background as merely a statistic in the numbers of life.

This book is a collection of tales centred around the activities in nursing homes, alternatively referred to as aged care facilities. Each chapter which is uniquely titled, gives a story from the personalized viewpoint of the players, in person of residents of the facilities, their families, and carers. The hapless-aged folks have to come to terms with the fact that they can no longer effectively care for themselves like they used to in the past. How each deals with the reality, and subsequent adjustment to a new lifestyle is what you would find out by reading this book.

I like the way Fletcher uses fiction to draw attention to an issue most people would want to pretend does not exist. The care of the aged as they approach the end of their lives. It almost seems as if getting old makes one "a thing" rather than a being. The same need for companionship, respect, love, understanding, and recognition craved by the "young" does not dissipate in the aged, despite health challenges and reduced bodily functionalities. I loved the spunk of this class of people, who have thrown off the shackles of convention thus giving them the boldness to act up their true feelings. It is a moral for all who are soaked up in the belief of a never-ending fountain of youth and invincibility. Yes, we are all going to get there someday. So, be forewarned! This book woke up emotions in me. It was a worthwhile read.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. There was so much warmth and wit, combined with a concise writing style. To cap it all, I did not detect any errors hence the editing was impeccable. There is no gainsaying that my reading pleasure was not ruined in any way.

I recommend this book to all and sundry. The limited use of profanities is not sufficient to offend one's sensibilities. Please do read this book if you do not mind the tickling of your conscience and emotions.
