Mind Twisters by Maxwell Conroe is a collection of creative short stories. The fictional stories cover a range of topics that keep the reader actively engaged. Each story is sprinkled with historical facts and references that pull the reader into a believable world created by the author. The locations of the story are described in vivid detail transporting the reader to Spain and the Mediterranean. Several of the short stories piqued my interest in learning more about the characters. For this reason, I felt that some of the stories could be expanded upon and transition into novels on their own.

I especially enjoyed reading the short story, "Mind Twister 7 Different Walks of Life: El Clint, El Malo Y El Feo." It began with a brief description of the art of writing a short story. Short stories are more plot-driven to immediately catch the reader’s attention. A novel has more time to focus on character development. The story begins with a discussion of Clint Eastwood and his time in Spain while filming the Dollar Trilogy films. The author even included photographs to capture the reader’s attention. The story describes a man named Virgilio. He tried to emulate the character Clint Eastwood played in these movies by wearing similar clothes. He was referred to as “El Clint.” Readers will enjoy reading about this character and his rivalry with El Malo.

Another story I enjoyed reading was "The Algarrobico Effect – A Modern Man Eco-Drama." The author vividly described a beautiful beach in Spain that has been used as a setting for several films. However, the beautiful beach was destroyed when a large hotel was built there. It destroyed the natural beauty of the beach. The book includes photographs to convey the monstrosity of the hotel that contained four hundred rooms. The Algarrobico Effect is a term that refers to the destruction of the natural landscape of an area.

What I liked most about this book is the creativity and imagination of the author in creating these characters and stories. Several of the stories left me wanting to learn more about the people or places that he described so vividly. However, there were several errors in the book. That is what I liked least while I was reading the stories. There were over ten errors, and they were distracting at times.

I enjoyed reading the stories in this book. Each story had some historical and factual elements that made the people and the places realistic and relatable. I recommend the book to readers who enjoy short stories filled with vivid descriptions and fascinating characters. Since there were over ten errors in the book, I am unable to give it a perfect rating. For that reason, I give this book a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

I have been really into reading creepy or weird short stories this fall season, and this book sounds like it should be added to my TBR. I especially enjoy books that weave in historical elements or traditional folklore into the stories.
