The Man Mission lasted 15 years. Four friends went to 13 countries and 2 times to Japan and New Zealand for a week or two each year. They added rules to the Man Mission along the way. Each trip involved hiking, biking, swimming, or other tests of manly endurance. Some rules were no whining and bathing is optional.
How they all planned the next trip by researching and organizing over the phone and emailing each other was amazing. How they could take time and have the money to do that every year was also exceptional. This is something that would appeal to many people. When you read this book, it's almost like being there, but completely safe and easy on the pocketbook.
Over the years, they shared their life's problems: careers, health, marriage, and family issues. I felt I knew each one well by the end of the book. They supported each other through some sad times. There were adventures that had hilarious moments. It's a beautiful thing when four friends can share their lives and grow older together. The author skillfully portrayed the interactions between the friends. They showed a genuine bond through the display of respect, empathy, and affection.
The author's experiences as a global traveler enriched his exquisite descriptions of faraway places. The group's interactions with the locals, choices of lodging, and the unique dishes they tried in each country were enjoyable.
I had hoped throughout the story that they would invite the wives, but that was against the Man Mission rules. That would have been one of the grand adventures if that had happened. The editing was flawless; I found no typos. I rated this book at a 5 out of 5. It is excellent overall in quality and deserves this score. This author should write more outstanding books like this.
