Review of Celestial Navigation
In July 1958, two young boys, Caleb Ivan Kulik and Jacob Ewan Davies, were born into the homes of Aleksander Kulik and James Davies, respectively. Both boys, unaware of what life held for them and how they would later cross paths, creating a bond that would last forever, started exploring life at a young age. In his book Celestial Navigation, Jonathan R. Lewis discussed the lives of Caleb Ivan Kulik (Cal) and Jacob Ewan Davies (Jake). Jake and Cal were the best of buddies, but gradually, as they matured, they realized they had no interest in girls but in their fellow gender. What would be the outcome of their relationship? Would society or their parents accept them if they came out openly? Acquire a readable copy of this written piece to find out.
What I understand from this book is that the author is portraying the theme of self-acceptance and realization. This aligns with the case of Cal and Jake, as they realize they have a different perspective on life—they love or find interest in boys rather than girls. I also grasp that living life to the fullest and pursuing our utmost desires is what makes life worth living.
What I enjoyed about the book was the author's vivid character descriptions and detailed event explanations. I appreciated the beginning, showcasing the bond between the two friends and how Cal defended Jake against bullies at Bon Air High School.
There is nothing I dislike about this book. My perspective became more enlightened when the author revealed that some parts of the book drew from personal childhood experiences. I identified just two errors, indicating professional editing. After careful consideration, I rate it 5 out of 5 stars for its well-written content.
I recommend this book to those in the LGBTQ community, as it explores themes of self-acceptance and realization, particularly in the context of same-gender relationships. It may resonate with individuals who identify with or are interested in LGBTQ experiences.
