Review of Northern Umbrage
Northern Umbrage by Dennis Lorenz is a thrilling sci-fi mystery that focuses on the impact of environmental pollution on the ecosystem. After a heroic event at the beach and a painful stay in the hospital, Dr. John Bucannon, an environmental pathologist, is attracted to a puzzling case in Eagle River, Wisconsin. Curious and excited, John makes his way northwest to investigate the reason for dead fish washing ashore near Eagle River, only to stumble onto another unexpected mystery about a bloodthirsty wild beast. John must now work with the help of his friends to solve both issues plaguing Eagle River as life there becomes increasingly dangerous.
There were multiple positives that I thought the book had. One of which was the twists that the plot contained. As it progressed, they were unexpected and interesting. Not only do they grab the readers' attention, but they also add needed information about the book's underlying plot. Another positive was the level of detail that the book had. It made the book captivating without overwhelming the reader with unnecessary and dense information. This is because of how well the details paint the image of each scene, seemingly conveying different emotions to the reader. They also didn’t distract the reader from the particular plot.
I didn’t find anything negative in the book. It was very thrilling but in a way that heightened the suspense gradually and extended the climax very close to the ending; I enjoyed that as it gave the book a steady pace, maintaining the focus on the theme and extending the plot to the very end. The characters felt very genuine. They possessed all the awkward, shy, anxious, unsure, etc., feelings in their interactions. This made them feel normal and relatable. I liked this because I thought it brought other elements of the book forward instead of maintaining the focus on the theme alone.
The theme of the book, atleast what I believe to be the theme, caught my attention. People in modern society often underestimate the effects of our actions on the environment directly and indirectly. This was well woven into the plot as it was presented gradually in graphic details. It also allows the reader to visualize firsthand the uncertain and dangerous impacts that environmental neglect can have on us while contemplating other ways that could lead back to similar disastrous results.I give this book a 5 out of 5. I did not find any typos, grammar, spelling, or punctuation mistakes in it. Therefore, I believe the book was exceptionally well-edited.
I recommend this book to people interested in thrillers, mystery, and science fiction. These are the genres that the book incorporates and represent the contents of the plot very well. Since the book combines these genres well, I believe it would give one an exciting dose of each.
