Northern Umbrage by Dennis Lorenz, Ph.D., is a gripping environmental sci-fi mystery that unravels the consequences of chemical pollutants, blending suspenseful storytelling with a poignant exploration of the perils faced by a small town. The protagonist, Dr. John Bucannon, an affable environmental pathologist from North Dakota, discovers more than he bargained for when investigating a mass die-off of fish near Eagle River, Wisconsin. As the community grapples with the economic fallout of the incident, Buc faces the challenge of unravelling the mystery behind the pollution. The narrative takes an unexpected turn as Buc encounters not only environmental threats but also a mysterious creature known as The Beast, resembling a powerful and swift wolf. The plot unfolds as Buc navigates the complexities of the town's inhabitants, uncovering hidden truths, and confronting the question of who is responsible for the pollution.

The book's greatest strength lies in its environmental awareness, providing a stark glimpse into the perils of chemical pollutants and a cautionary vision of an unchecked future. Lorenz skillfully intertwines sci-fi, adventure, and mystery, maintaining suspense as revelations unfold during Buc's investigation into Green Bay Pulp and Paper's toxic practices. The well-developed characters enrich the narrative. My favourite character was Sadie, and I thoroughly enjoyed her relationship with Buc.

There is nothing that I didn't like about this book. It is a compelling blend of science, storytelling, and environmental consciousness. Moreover, I didn't find any errors, and the book is extremely well edited.

The book excels at merging scientific facts, personal anecdotes, and historical narratives, making it a thought-provoking read. The plot seamlessly weaves together sci-fi, adventure, and mystery. It also offers a revealing exploration of the dire repercussions of chemical pollutants on life, serving as a stark reminder of a potential future if environmental damage goes unchecked. The well-crafted characters, like Buc, Sadie, and Glen Power Claw, contribute depth, with their interactions adding a compelling layer to the story. Moreover, the book's relevance extends beyond historical exploration, tackling contemporary issues and serving as a valuable resource for understanding Northern cultures. For all these reasons and more, I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

The book belongs to the genre of environmental sci-fi mystery, making it particularly appealing to readers who enjoy a combination of science fiction, adventure, mystery, and themes centred around environmental awareness. Additionally, individuals with an interest in contemporary issues and a curiosity about Northern cultures will likely find the book relevant and insightful.
