Nimue by Ayn Cates Sullivan, PhD is the perfect blend of old-world folklore and modern fantasy fiction! Sullivan effortlessly blends professionally researched material with creative writing to bring the reader a page turner that is worthy of today’s fast-paced culture. This novel is one of the most accurate pieces based on Arthurian mythology that has been written in this age.

The story takes place in modern-day New York, where Nina, a seventeen-year-old girl, is preparing for a trip to her mother’s home country, Britain. Armed only with her mother’s lessons of the old ways, a weird nightmare, and a phone number for a psychic, Nina sets out on a dizzying journey into her past. This journey will send her back in time to the world of magic, faeries, and the Ladies of the Lake.

It is evident that this book has been professionally edited because there are very few errors throughout over two hundred pages. Each line is carefully crafted with a blending of fantasy and research that any reader can enjoy. Though the reader might find that it is easy to fall off track while trying to keep up with different characters, timelines, and concepts, it is well worth the effort. Getting lost in the story is half the fun! Other than that, there is nothing to not like about this book!

For sensitive readers, there are some situations that might be unsuitable for some. There is some sexual content and suggestion; however, none of the scenes are overly descriptive. Also, there are some concepts that some might find objectionable, such as Christianity being meshed in with other mythologic theories. However, there is not any offensive language or overly violent content.

Part of the appeal of mythology is that anything is possible, and this book highlights all the best parts of that. Sullivan takes this to a whole new level by entwining Roman, Greek, Norse, and Arthurian mythology into a plausible story that will have the reader wanting to search the woods for faeries and the lakes for ladies. Are there unseen creatures of old in the morning fog?

All that said, Nimue is clearly a 5 out of 5 , and a must read for anyone who loves the world of magic and mythology! Whether the reader is knowledgeable of the old ways, or is searching for enlightenment, this novel is a one of kind experience that can be enjoyed by all!
