Review of Nimue: Freeing Merlin (Barnes & Noble Edition)
In Ayn Cates Sullivan's book Nimue: Freeing Merlin, Nina is the current-age reincarnation of Nimue. Nina, a 17-year-old girl from Manhattan, is visiting England with her mother. Her mother, Diana, was an expert in Celtic Mythology and wanted to take Nina to Britain during the Summer Solstice to visit Stonehenge and other sacred sites. After sharing a dream with Daphne, her uncle's friend, about entering another world, Daphne gave Nina the address of the healer, Ganieda. Incidentally, Ganieda is Merlin's legendary sister. While fleeing from some would-be kidnappers, Nina ran into a steep stairway and began descending. She eventually fell through a portal to the Underworld, where she took on the identity of Nimue, Nature. The book follows Nimue's existence and relates the many legends of Nimue, the Lady of the Lake. Her education under the leadership of Merlin is shared. Is Nimue a hero, or is she evil? You must read Nimue: Freeing Merlin to learn the details of her existence.
I enjoyed learning some of the stories from folklore and mythology. The book explores some legends surrounding Stonehenge and other sacred sites. This book gives attention to the Holy Grail and other grails. I want to learn more about Joseph of Arimathea. I would love to visit Stonehenge.
I was confused during the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. A better background in these legends would be helpful for me. The ancient spelling of names was difficult for me. I reread the book as so much of this information was new.
Nimue: Freeing Merlin is appropriate for all ages. Although there were many accounts of romance, there was no explicit sex portrayed. I recommend it to people interested in mythology, legends, folklore, and fantasy. Some background in tales of Merlin, King Arthur, Camelot, the Holy Grail, and Druids will be helpful for your enjoyment. On the other hand, it touches on many legends and is a good overview for those interested in learning more.
I rate this book as 5 out of 5 stars. It was written linearly, making it possible to follow Nimue through her many stages of learning. It's not a bad thing that I had to read it twice. It was interesting enough to hold my interest in doing so. As I mentioned previously, I only had a little background.
