I really need some classic literature recommendations

Post by litman1 »

Hello, I really need some help in deciding which classic books to read. I have already read a little Jane Austin, Dumas, and Stevenson and I want to know where to go next. When it comes to reading though I really try to stray away from sexual themes and bad language (even if it all "enhances" the book). I did not like Steinbeck b/c of this and Hemingway turned me off as well. So what are some good classics without bad language or sexual themes? I am mostly into more modern classics right now, as in 1900-1950 but anything from the 1800s is ok too. I am looking for serious answers here so if anyone can provide me some good answers please let me know, thank you!

Animal Farm is a great classic. There's nothing sexual or profane in there from what I remember. it's a social commentary. It's about animals taking over a farm from their human masters and developing their own society. It kind of sounds dumb, but its one of my favorite books.

I loved Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. A good prequel is Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys.

You could try some Charles Dickens, such as David Copperfield, but I find him quite dull.

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott is a locely book, but a little before the time period you're interested in.

I'm halfway through To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, written in 1960, and it has me hooked. I'd really recommend this one.
