Review of IslanD-25
Alan Doer's novel IslanD-25 is a thrilling story that depicts the contrast between Old Earth and Crystal. Crystal is portrayed as a peaceful place, but is it really as idyllic as it seems? The narrative revolves around the main character, Alex, who experiences vivid dreams that feel almost tangible at the start of the story. The division between Earth and Crystal is highlighted, emphasising their distinct systems. For instance, Crystal is run by robots, unlike Earth. How does this disparity impact Alex and his family? To uncover the answers and piece together the story, I recommend delving into this book.
In this book, we are introduced to the protagonist, Alex, who is woken up from his sleep by his son. The plot thickens in the second chapter when Marina suddenly ends her relationship with Alex, leading him to seek comfort from his friends. The story introduces Crystal, a serene place where residents practice meditation to find inner peace. The middle of the book brings adventure and excitement as Alex discovers a project called the D-25, which aims to create a better environment and more harmonious features. If this project is successful, what will it mean for Crystal and Earth?
The book possesses numerous favourable qualities. For instance, it is devoid of errors and features engaging and clear language, making it accessible to readers of all levels and enhancing their enjoyment of the characters' development. The character development, particularly that of Alex, resonated with me as I progressed through the book. The author's use of descriptive language facilitated my visualisation of changing scenes, which I found appealing. Additionally, the author's simple writing style was well-suited for the book, and I appreciated this aspect. The fast-paced nature of the book enabled me to maintain focus, as I tend to become restless with slow-paced narratives that dwell excessively on a single scene. The book's fast-paced approach effectively conveyed the dilemmas, dramas, and adventures, capturing my interest from the very first page.
In addition to the favourable aspects, I did identify a potential drawback, although it is not inherently negative. Initially, I observed certain elements in the storyline that seemed incongruous and could potentially be perplexing or ambiguous to some readers. While this initially caused some confusion, I persisted and ultimately discerned that the unresolved elements at the outset of the book were resolved by the end, for which I commend the author. Apart from this, my overall reading experience with this book was pleasurable.
In summary, I give the book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. While I initially considered deducting one star due to initial confusion, I ultimately found that the author effectively resolved this issue in the conclusion. Consequently, I do not find this to be a compelling reason to deduct any stars and therefore believe the book merits a full rating. I believe that this book will be of interest to enthusiasts of fantasy books.
