Nimue, also known as Lady of the Lake, is a goddess whose role is to protect and heal the natural world. In addition to this, she is also depicted as a mage or a learned person with magical abilities. Some sources describe her as a powerful sorceress, but whether or not she is considered to be evil depends on one's interpretation of certain scenes in the novel.

Nimue is an eternal character who takes us through many lifetimes. During each life, she learns lessons and experiences the consequences of her actions as a healer. Her purpose is to ensure that the balance of life is maintained and that the Earth remains healthy. However, she reminds us that life is unpredictable, and sometimes we feel like the world is coming to an end. But if we're willing to do the work to look within ourselves, we can restore our faith and become whole once again.

Mage Nimue is a character who is believed to be in harmony with the underworld and sometimes appears as a dark enchantress. However, her character changes after her lover and mentor, Merlin, suffers at the hands of humans and can no longer fulfill his sacred duty. When Nimue is tasked with restoring order, she makes mistakes and fails. In her time of captivity and isolation, she finds strength through her struggles. She heals her fractured self by viewing her other lives within portals to other realms. She must free herself and become unburdened to "Free Merlin."

In this book, the story revolves around mystic guardians, the Holy Grail, and Arthurian legends. The Deity Nimue, with origins in ancient times, is associated with the Faery Grail and has Irish roots across the Celtic Sea. It is believed that Merlin also originated in Ireland and has been present since the beginning of time. However, in this novel, Merlin is not depicted as a single person, but rather a title or occupation that any gender can hold. The protagonist, Nimue, embarks on a journey of self-discovery and eventually becomes Merlina.

"I would like to share that I rated the novel “Nimue: Freeing Merlin” with 4 out of 4 stars. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in reading about a young woman on a quest to discover her true self. The author, Ayn Cates Sullivan, has done an exceptional job retelling old tales with a fresh and unique perspective."
