Hiram McDowell is a character who shows no concern for those near him. For example, when his hiking partner was about to die, he neglected him and took his oxygen supply after he eventually died. His wife could also feel the consequences of his selfishness and insensitivity. Hiram later gets entangled in a consequence of his character, which sets him up for future discomfort. Actually, he had wanted to become the president of the International College of Surgeons, as he was not satisfied with his position as a regent on the board of directors of the International College of Surgeons. To get this position, he made a promise to promote Michael O'Leary, a member of the College Board of Governors Executive. After getting the position, he failed to fulfill his promise to Michael O'Leary, and the rest of his story goes south, being characterized by suffering. With the influence of Michael's professional position, will Hiram's position as a president last long enough?

William H. Coles' McDowell delves into the life of Hiram McDowell, a surgeon whose manipulative approach to achieving his professional and political aspirations leads him into peril. The narrative explores themes of betrayal, deceit, remorse, and eventual redemption.

This book is an educational yet entertaining masterpiece. I love stories that give engagement, such that any amount of time spent reading them won't seem long. I got lots of emotions while reading this book, and this is the first thing that I love most about the book. Initially, I felt rage toward the character of Hiram, and later, I had to feel pity for his helplessness. Another thing I appreciate about the book is the story's suspenseful quality. I could not predict what I would see next until I turned a new page to find a new surprise. This quality also helped me get immersed more and more at different points of my reading exercise. The writer of this book is an award-winning author who has won awards like the Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction. His expertise shines out in the book's authenticity, evident in the word choice in presenting this plot. The plot is educative, as readers gain knowledge about the medical field while enjoying the rollercoaster of engaging events that Hiram's world offers.

I would give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. The book is professionally edited because I only found one typo in it. Also, I found nothing to dislike in it. Lovers of realistic fiction, medical students, and general audiences of fiction stories would love this book.

Your effectively captures the essence of the book, highlighting themes of betrayal, deceit, remorse, and redemption. The portrayal of Hiram as a character who shows little concern for those around him creates a sense of intrigue and sets the stage for a compelling story of moral reckoning.
