A Good Boy
Anthony Andre
Book Review by Kimberleigh Taylor
Anthony Andre’s book, A Good Boy, is the story of Wesley Aames who has been called to pastor a church that has declining membership. Aames, who has recently lost his wife, has never served as a pastor before and has little idea of how to go about it. Just as he takes on this new job, a young member of the congregation commits suicide. Aames’ new job just got a whole lot harder.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and give it a well-deserved 4 out of 4 stars. The main character is Wesley Aames, a preacher who cusses and drinks. Strange, you might say. However, what some may consider character flaws make Wesley Aames relatable and believable. He is embarking on a new career as a pastor of a dying church, and those bad habits show just how unfit he may be for the job. Will his caring nature and knack for saying the right thing win him over to the congregation? I could not put this book down because I had to know. It was a quick, easy read. Thanks to the author’s talent for ending chapters making the reader want more, I spent the entire day reading his book.
It’s hard to categorize this work of fiction. I found it under “other fiction”, and that classification works as well as any other. Themes of love and loss, redemption, and spirituality are woven throughout this novel. It’s a book that makes you feel better for having read it.
As a lover of words, I enjoyed the author’s skill with word choice. I really like the way Mr. Andre introduced characters with such detailed descriptions, yet those descriptions weren’t overly wordy. I did have a bit of a problem keeping all the characters straight because there were a lot of them. And why so many characters with Lee as part of their names (Rosa Lee, Jamie Lee, Kim Lee, Song Lee)?
There were quite a few grammatical errors, mostly minor that didn’t interfere with understanding. Some readers may not even catch them. Some words should have been made plural, and there were a few instances of the wrong name or a misspelling. As a side note, the copy I downloaded had random shifts in font and boldface. Words and even letters changed typeface at times. That didn’t detract from the story at all, but it was definitely jarring for me as a reader (not to mention a little hard on the eyes). I didn’t think the errors warranted lowering the rating by a star (from 4 stars to 3), but I would’ve taken a half-star if allowed.
A Good Boy was an easy-to-read book that completely captivated my interest. The characters, plot, and author’s talented writing kept me so engaged that I finished the book in one sitting. The strong messages of God’s love and people doing right by others left me feeling content and refreshed. I happily discovered there is another book in the series, and I look forward to reading it.
