The Skye in June by June Ahern is a beautiful fiction set up in the mid of 1950’s.
June MacDonald is the main character of the story.
June is the youngest daughter of Cathy and Jimmy MacDonald. Cathy challenges her husband Jimmy by giving June a pagan name instead of a Catholic saint’s, just like their convention. She is different from her entire family. After a tragedy in the family, they move to San Francisco from Scotland. Jimmy is a proud man and needs that his young daughters ought to take after his strict guidelines. Every one of the young girls in MacDonald family is raised entirely by the standards of Catholicism, beginning at a youthful age; June starts to differ with a large portion of the traditional lessons. At an exceptionally young age June could see things that most people could not. None of her family members believes her psychic abilities. In the wake of meeting Mrs. G she learns about her forces and builds up an enthusiasm for tarot cards. Be that as it may, after the demise of Mrs. G, June begins feeling alone.
At school June is treated very badly by fellow students and teachers, who feel that June is a witch and she will burn in hell. This makes June feel extremely awkward and desolate. She discovers comfort within the sight of Ms. Noel who shows her to utilize her psychic powers properly. She even teaches her telepathy and Clair audio. In any case, soon Ms. Noel was expelled from the school and June was allowed to sit alone and helpless. Will June's family ever acknowledge her the way she is? Will June keep on following her desires or surrender to the desires of her family and society?
The book is written in third person perspective. The narrative of the book is elegantly composed. I enjoyed the characters of the story. They are very much characterized and have profundity. Gender inequality back in 1950’s is all well portrayed in the story. Jimmy thinks that men are superior to women. He thinks that women are meant to get married and raise children and there is no use to send them to college. His perspectives are exceptionally very much outraged by his girls. The author has voiced against gender inequality through the characters and story of the book. Moreover, she has wonderfully described the deterioration of family relations due to lack of trust and understanding. Though Jimmy loved his daughters a lot, yet he could not keep his family together.
I liked how the love of sisters is highlighted in the story. June and her three sisters always supported each other no matter how hard the situation was. Further, mother’s lover is also depicted pleasantly in the story In the first place, Cathy did not do much for her little girls but rather in the long run took control and remained for them at whatever point required. I liked how the characters evolve and mature throughout the story. All the characters have different roles and personalities. All the four MacDonald girls are depicted differently and yet they have a few things common in them Change in customs and societies with the headway in time, is likewise something that drew me towards the story. In the first place I couldn't feel associated, however as the story unfurled, I felt snared by it.
I liked the character of June the most. I could connect with her. She openly expresses her views and never pays attention to what people say about her. I liked The Skye in June and rate it 3 out of 4 stars. The story of this book is well written and is very interesting.
The book is very much organized. The book is divided into chapters and the paragraphs are well edited, which makes it an easy read. There are no major grammatical and spelling errors, with the exception of the one in chapter-29, where a few words are repeated by mistake. Religions like Catholicism and paganism have been emphasized in this book and may not be liked by some of the readers. People, who are feminist and religious undertones, would definitely enjoy it.
