McDowell is a work of literary fiction that portrays the life of a selfish and narcissistic surgeon, Hiram McDowell, whose life and everything he stands for crash down before his face as a result of a family tragedy that forces him to retrace his steps and learn the noble qualities of humankind.
 
The protagonist, McDowell, had an almost perfect life, save for his lack of empathy and selfishness. He manages to reach the peak of his career by sabotaging a contract with his colleague and constantly stepping on the feet of his colleagues. His roller coaster of bliss comes to an end when he’s accused of a very serious crime, convicted, and has to face the harsh reality of life as a result of a family tragedy. The novel also describes the protagonist as a chronic cheat who constantly ignores his wife and pays little attention to his family while pulling off the facade of a humanitarian to outsiders.
 
The book is a well-detailed and interesting read, and I enjoyed every single page of it. I also loved that it teaches valuable life lessons, and I enjoyed following the protagonist’s journey from the heights of society to its depths and learning morals through his own experience. I admired the protagonist’s ability to pick up the pieces of his life and how he summoned the courage to forge on with life despite his epic fall from grace.
 
I thoroughly enjoyed this book by William H. Coles and found no fault whatsoever. I was completely drawn to the flow of the story and read it nonstop. It boasts a fantastic narrative, captivating characters, and flawless plot lines.
 
I rate this book five out of five stars because it was a worthy read and very entertaining. The book was nicely edited, the story was beautifully told, and I found a few grammatical errors while reading it. I highly recommend this book to lovers of captivating fiction.
