Do you have fond memories of your middle or high school years? Do you have any bad memories? Do you remember your first crush? First kiss? The first time you weren’t picked last at gym? The first time you got hit in the face with a ball at gym? If any of this seems like familiar times, you may enjoy G.C. Cook’s Tales From A Nobody.

In Tales From A Nobody, we meet a nameless narrator who receives a mysterious call from a woman from his younger years. Hearing her voice causes him to feel nostalgic and he looks back on his middle school and high school years. The plot switches back and forth between the past and present day as readers learn more about the relationship between the mysterious female caller and the narrator. In the book, readers take a journey with the narrator as he remembers his years growing up from a teen to a young man. He reminiscence about crushes, kisses, baseball games, being sent to military school and much more.

The title and cover page of the book caught my interest and I felt it had an amusing feel to it. I wasn’t surprised at all to be chuckling aloud to myself as I was reading. The narrator’s past is written in a light-hearted, humorous tone that will appeal to many readers. The story is relatable as a lot of moments in the narrator’s life will cause many readers to feel nostalgic about their own school years. The present-day scenes had a more serious tone and the author masterfully balanced the two. The plot is amusing enough to keep readers chuckling and invested in the story. It is also serious enough as we learn more about the female caller and the depth behind being labeled a “Nobody.”

If I had to give a negative, it would be that I wish the narrator had a name. His character was well-developed and likable. As a teen, he seemed like the kind of kid that you would have fun throwing eggs at people’s house. With. Even though it is easy to become invested in his character, the fact that he is not given a name is a negative. I know that someone could argue that the significance of the narrator not having a name is tied to the title. Even if that is the case, I feel like giving the narrator a stronger identity would have made him even more relatable to readers.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I wish the narrator had a name, besides that, I think the author crafted a likable character. The plot was humorous with the right amount of seriousness. I didn’t see any grammatical errors in the book. I could tell that the author took the time to properly edit the book. I would recommend this book to both a teen and adult audience. I feel like both would be able to relate and enjoy the character’s many stories about his teenage life. This is a book that I would definitely encourage others to read.

I agree that the narrator should've had been given a name. I imagine that he could be introduced in the last part like to say that the 'nobody' is now a 'somebody' for a conclusion. But, hey, if that's what the author wants then he has every right to keep the nobody anonymous. Anyway, thanks for the great review.

This seems like a fun read. Everybody (or am I being presumptuous?) looks back to high school with fondness. All those teenage oohs and aahs make for great nostalgia.

while the memories might be fun to read, it would have been more fun if the narrator had a name. however, it's a good book generally and the review does provide good pointers on what to expect from the book

Sounds like a great book to read to beat the boring afternoons! If you could name the character, what name would you give to him? I'm just curious because I sometimes give names to people depending on their personality. Like, if a girl is timid and shy, she looks like an "Anna" to me. Haha!
