"Sip Lake" by Joseph Basara is a delightful romp through the summer of 1977 in Cypress City, Florida, told through the eyes of the affable protagonist, Owen Cloud. This comedy romance novel is a refreshing take on love, friendship, and self-discovery, peppered with historical events and quirky local flavor.

Owen Cloud, our endearing narrator, is a relatable character whose journey resonates with authenticity. As an orderly working the night shift at a local hospital, Owen navigates the ups and downs of life with humility and humor. His insecurities about his appearance contrast with his endearing personality, making him a charming protagonist to follow.

What I liked most about the book “Sip Lake” was its rich tapestry of characters and their interactions with Owen. From his childhood friend to the enigmatic Tina Gardenia, each character adds depth and dimension to Owen's world. The camaraderie Owen shares with his neighbors and patients underscores the importance of friendship and community in navigating life's challenges. Despite its comedic flair, “Sip Lake” doesn’t shy away from heartfelt themes of friendship and self-discovery. Owen’s journey serves as a reminder that love often blossoms in unexpected places, rooted in genuine connections forged through shared experiences.

Basara's writing style effortlessly captures the essence of 1970s Florida, infusing the narrative with vivid imagery and nostalgic charm. Incorporating literary references and spontaneous bursts of song add an extra layer of whimsy to the story, keeping readers engaged from start to finish. There is nothing to dislike about the book and it is well-edited. I found no errors. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars for its good work, characters, and narrative!

Overall, "Sip Lake" is a heartwarming tale that blends comedy, romance, and coming-of-age themes with a distinctive flair. Basara's masterful storytelling and lovable characters make this novel a must-read for anyone seeking a lighthearted escape into the sun-soaked world of Cypress City.
